Solskjær applauded after a dramatic finish – de Gea saved the penalty

(West Ham 1-2 Manchester United) Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea (30) saved a penalty, for the first time in five years, by West Ham captain Mark Noble (34) in extra time. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær (48) ran straight towards the goalkeeper to celebrate the victory.

Jesse Lingard became the big culprit when United tapte 1–2 for toddlers in the Champions League earlier this week. On Sunday, he bounced back when he won the Manchester United game with a great goal just before the end, against West Ham, where he flourished on loan this spring.

“I am ecstatic,” Lingard told Sky Sports.

But it must be said that the greatest hero is De Gea. In extra time, West Ham was penalized with the help of the VAR when a ball hit Luke Shaw’s arm. Mark Noble was the replacement. This is De Gea’s first penalty stop in 40 attempts, since April 2016.

– There are three “giant” points for us. The only thing that crossed my mind was “saving that ball,” De Gea told Sky Sports.

DESPERATION: Mark Noble was substituted in overtime to take the penalty. Went wrong.

In the Sky Sports study, former top players Graeme Souness and Roy Keane criticized West Ham manager David Moyes’ choice for Noble to take the penalty.

– It was a bad decision. He hadn’t warmed up and he’s cold, says Souness.-

– It was very strange. It had not been warmed up properly. Sometimes managers can be too smart, Keane says.

De Gea says he was preparing for Declan Rice to shoot the penalty.

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna laments on Noble’s behalf.

– Has enough experience to receive all penalties. You’re guaranteed to wear the next one, says Ogbonna.

It was Noble’s first penalty kick, after ten consecutive successful attempts, in the Premier League since December 2016.

There were several, especially Cristiano Ronaldo, who called for penalties. Maybe Ronaldo should have had a penalty or two earlier in the inning. He fell to the ground after challenging Vladimír Coufal just over ten minutes before the end, at 1-1.

Referee Martin Atkinson rejected Manchester United’s request, much to Ronaldo’s frustration. Ronaldo also went down in overtime at 2-1, but this time he was not penalized either. The star did not seem to believe his own eyes.

CELEBRATION DOWN: Jesse Lingard scored against the club that was on loan at West Ham last season and thus came down to celebrate the game-deciding goal.

After a quiet opening number, there were several chances towards the end of the first half. Bruno Fernandes was very close to scoring. The Portuguese thundered in the middle, but fingers from West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and the post blocked the away team’s lead.

Three minutes later, West Ham got ahead of Saïd Benrahma, in what was the team’s third chance. He shot from 18 meters. The ball went through Raphäel Varane and changed direction. Therefore, the Gea was outmatched.

THREE IN ROW: Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in all three games since his return from Manchester United.

It was only five minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo tied, after several failed attempts. Bruno Fernandes hit the ball with precision. Ronaldo made the first direct attempt at Fabianski, but on the return he scored his fourth goal in three games since United’s return.

The 36-year-old was close 2-1 both before and after the break. Once again a good Fabianski got in the way. The second half was a constant battle. The dramatic final minutes finally gave victory to Manchester United. The red jerseys top the table with rivals in Liverpool with 13 points.
