Kheira Hamraoui was attacked by two masked men as she got out of the car of her teammate Aminata Diallo on Thursday 4 November. On Wednesday, the latter was arrested on suspicion of having participated in acts of violence against his teammate.

New York Times writes that the two companions took home from a team dinner. Diallo is said to have driven the car, while Hamraoui was a passenger. The American newspaper writes that they both live in Chatou, an exclusive suburb on the outskirts of Paris.

When they were about to approach Hamraoui’s house at around 10:30 p.m. M., Two masked men came out of the darkness and pulled Hamraoui out of the passenger seat. The PSG player is said to have been hit with a metal bar for several minutes, where most of the blows were aimed at the legs. The abusers did not take anything of value.

The media that have covered the case write that Diallo should have hired the masked men to prevent Hamraoui from competing for playing time.

On Tuesday, PSG played the Champions League game against Real Madrid. Hamraoui was left out of “personal ground.” Diallo was the replacement.

Early on Wednesday morning, French police arrested Diallo at his home and confirmed in a statement that his arrest was related to the Hamraoui assault, although they did not explicitly link Diallo to the assault.

The attack on Hamraoui has caused many to send thoughts to Nancy Kerrigan and Tony Harding. On January 6, 1994, Kerrigan was attacked and hit with an iron bar. The assailant was hired by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband. The attack was carried out to have Harding take Kerrigan’s place on the American Olympic team in Hamar.

However, Kerrigan recovered for the Olympics, and both she and Harding competed at the Hamar Olympic Amphitheater in February 1994. At the time, Tonya Harding denied any involvement in the plans to attack Kerrigan. She still had to come out with compensation and was sentenced to community service. Harding was also banned for life from the American Figure Skating Federation.

in a statement writes the PSG condemning the incidents.

– Since Thursday, November 4, the club has taken all necessary measures to guarantee the health, well-being and safety of all the players of the women’s team. Paris St.-Germain is working with the Versailles police to clarify the facts and the club is closely monitoring the progress of the case and will study what to do, according to the statement.

Noël Le Graët, president of the French Football Federation, expressed his shock at the arrest of Diallo.

– What is suspected is unlikely. I know both players. It terrifies me if what is mentioned is true. It seems unthinkable, says Le Graët.

Hamraoui was teammates with Ada Hegerberg in Lyon 2016-2018 and Celin Bizet Ildhusøy plays for PSG and this week he made his Champions League debut for the club.

The AFP news agency writes that no formal charges have been filed against the player so far.
