Gender-based violence: strong mobilization expected Saturday in the street in France

(Belga) “Violence is not inevitable”: defenders of women’s rights were mobilized on Saturday in the streets of Paris and many cities in France, to say “stop” to gender-based and sexual violence, and “demand policies public to the height “against this scourge.

Two years after the “Grenelle” against domestic violence, “impunity must end. Equality education must become a priority”, insists the call to demonstrate, carried by the feminist collective #NousToutes and about sixty d associations, unions and political parties. In Paris, the demonstration, strong of several thousand people, started around 2:30 p.m. from the Place de la République, behind a banner #NousToutes proclaiming “stop to gender-based and sexual violence” in the direction of Nation, noted a journalist from AFP. Like the head banner, many placards on a purple background, the color of this mobilization, delivered messages such as “ras rape”, or “65% of victims of feminicides had contacted the police”. Saturday’s parades are organized ahead of the International Day Against Violence Against Women, November 25. In Paris, the demonstration had attracted 100,000 people two years ago according to the demonstrators (35,000 according to the police). “Violence is not inevitable, it can stop,” assured journalists Marylie Breuil, of the #NousToutes collective, for whom “there is a huge gap between the mobilization of society and the commitment of politicians”. She said she expected presidential candidates “to make strong commitments in terms of prevention”. In France, some 220,000 women are victims of violence and 94,000 are raped each year, notes #NousToutes. Since January 1, 101 women have been killed by their spouses, according to the count of the collective “Feminicides by companion or ex”. For the whole of 2020, the figure had reached 102 feminicides and 146 in 2019, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The demonstration is also an opportunity to denounce incest, pedophile violence or violence suffered by children in the marital context, said the organizers. (Belga)
