LR: before the congress, the candidates auditioned by their peers

The exercise already looks like a great oral before its time. On the eve of the debate broadcast this Sunday evening on CNEWS, the five candidates for the Les Républicains (LR) congress are meeting this Saturday, November 20, in Issy-les-Moulineaux (Hauts-de-Seine) on the occasion of a Highly observed national council.

From 9:30 a.m., from the city’s Palais des Congrès, Annie Genevard, president of the National Council of Republicans, will thus be responsible for drawing lots for the order in which Michel Barnier, Xavier Bertrand, Eric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin and Valérie Pécresse in front of several hundred LR executives gathered all day.

Once the order of play has been established, and after a video presentation, each of them will have ten minutes to speak and then fifty minutes of questions and answers with the audience.

In the presidential race of the right-wing party, the sequence promises to be decisive. Instead of an open primary, the Republicans have indeed opted for a congress to choose their 2022 presidential candidate.

Xavier Bertrand, very watched

Concretely, it is therefore the some 150,000 members – the party having almost doubled the number of memberships since the end of September – who will be able to vote, from December 1 to 4, to choose the one who will lead the battle for the supreme office.

And in this context, if there is one performance that will be all the more watched today, it is that of Xavier Bertrand. In the lead in voting intentions on the right, the president of the Hauts-de-France region is indeed in difficulty among the members of the Republicans who accuse him of a form of “betrayal” after leaving the party in 2017.

But far from wanting to solve their problems in private, the Republicans have instead chosen transparency because the exchanges, filmed, will be broadcast on YouTube and via social networks.

The fact remains that, whatever happens, if there are five LR candidates vying for the congress, only one or only one of them will represent the party in the presidential election of 2022.

Thus, after the National Council this Saturday, Michel Barnier, Xavier Bertrand, Eric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin and Valérie Pécresse will meet again, this Sunday evening from 8:50 p.m. on CNEWS, for a debate and each present their project to the French.

To get a clearer picture, this Sunday’s debate will focus on three main themes: “The security of the French”, “Which France for tomorrow?” and finally “French money”.

The exchanges of “Elysée 2022: the great debate of the Republicans”, official title of the program, can also be followed on social networks via the hashtag #DebatLR.
