More and more aggression against SNCB staff in 2021

(Belga) During the first three quarters of 2021, attacks against SNCB staff members increased by 53% compared to the same period in 2019, i.e. before the health crisis, the railway company said on Saturday , after the violent assault of a companion on Friday evening in Ottignies.

In 2021, SNCB noted more than 1,300 attacks against its staff. Nearly four out of ten assaults are attacks on physical integrity leading to incapacity for work and a strong psychological impact. The two main causes of aggression are linked to travelers without a ticket (39%) and, since the start of the pandemic, to travelers who do not comply with health measures (23%). The SNCB ensures that it is carrying out a permanent fight against attacks, in particular through the presence of Sécurail in the stations. In trains, large-scale targeted control actions are carried out in collaboration with the federal police, while areas with camera surveillance are enlarged. Friday evening, a train attendant was savagely assaulted near Ottignies in a train joining Dinant to Brussels-Midi. The victim was severely beaten and had to be taken to hospital. Those responsible are still wanted (Belga)
