Jorginho for better or worse for Chelsea: Huge loss and penalty scoring against Manchester United

(Chelsea – Manchester United 1-1) He lost the ball as the back man and was to blame for Manchester United taking the lead, but from the penalty spot Jorginho corrected and saved points for league leader Chelsea.

The Italian was – in the usual way – icy cold from the penalty spot when Chelsea were punished after a reckless intervention by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Englishman was on the ankle of Thiago Silva after a corner, and despite fierce protests from Manchester United players, Chelsea received a penalty and subsequent equalizer in the 69th minute.

But just under 20 minutes earlier, Jorginho was poised to become the scapegoat for Chelsea.

– I am very pleased with our performance and efforts. We were aggressive, never stopped attacking, but unfortunately we scored two goals – one for each team, says Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel with a small smile on his face, aiming for Jorginho’s mistake.

IN FOCUS: These two players, Jadon Sancho and Jorginho, both set the tone for their clubs on Sunday night.

Sancho’s first league goal

It was the London team that controlled the big game at Stamford Bridge, but Manchester United resisted. It seemed that Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s interim manager, had set up a battle plan where the Red Devils would bet on counterattacks, and when given the opportunity after 50 minutes of play, they did not mind asking.

Bruno Fernandes cleared away one of Chelsea’s many corners, and Jorginho was left in the middle line as Chelsea’s back man. He probably thought he had plenty of time to take the ball down, but Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford came up against him. Aggressive United players and a bad touch from the Chelsea captain made Sancho snatch the ball and whiz past.

He and Rashford came two on one with lone Edouard Mendy, Sancho fitted a pass and Mendy bet on – and thus the Manchester United wing could easily wide side into the match’s first goal.

It was the summer purchase’s first Premier League goal, just a few days after he scored his very first for the club.

ICE COLD: Jadon Sancho fooled Edouard Mendy and scored the first goal of the match.

The goal came towards the end of the game.

Chelsea dominance

Manchester United admittedly looked better after the break, but in the first half there were more or less games against one goal. Chelsea dominated from start to finish before the break, and only a good David de Gea prevented Chelsea scoring. Only when Callum Hudson-Odoi was presented with a huge opportunity by Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelöf. But as so many times before this season, De Gea was where he was going, preventing a nightmare start for Manchester United.

A little later in the round he was again put to the test, this time by Antonio Rüdiger. The German midfielder joined the attack, and did what no one expected: Tried from distance.

The shot from just under 23 meters was very good, but again De Gea was there: With a couple of fingers on the ball, he made sure that it slammed into the crossbar, instead of the net masks rattling.

The net masks did not rattle several times after Jorginho’s equalization, but they could have done so quickly in overtime of overtime:

The match wavered back and forth and almost seven minutes into overtime, Rüdiger had to finish completely unpressurized a few meters from the Manchester United goal, but the German sent the shot over. Rüdiger could hardly believe it, and went long after the final signal and despaired.

– We just have to swallow this. We played a very good football match and I am happy about that, says Tuchel.

Thus, Manchester United’s first Premier League match after Ole Gunnar Solskjær ended 1-1. This is the third time in a row these two play a draw against each other.

– I’m disappointed, really. I am very proud of the players and the support staff in what has been a tough week, a tough period. We have made the best of it. But we came here to win this match, and are disappointed that we did not, says Michael Carrick, who believes the victory was “taken from them” and that Chelsea should not have had a penalty.

Now it is expected German Ralf Rangnick to take over Manchester United. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp thinks this is bad news for the other Premier League clubs:

If the reports are correct and Rangnick takes over Manchester United, he will take over a United team that is in 8th place after Sunday’s 1-1 match. Chelsea still lead the Premier League, one point ahead of table-toppers Manchester City and two points ahead of Liverpool in 3rd place.
