Malawi: Minister of Lands arrested for corruption

(Belga) Malawi’s Land Minister Kezzie Msukwa was arrested on Thursday for corruption on suspicion of receiving bribes from a wealthy local businessman to rule in his favor in the allocation of land, said the anti-corruption office (ACB).

During an investigation into businessman Zuneth Sattar and his agent Ashok Kumar Sreedharan, accused of having paid kickbacks in order to obtain public contracts, the anti-corruption organization discovered embezzlement in connection with land affairs, she said in a statement. According to the arrest warrant of which AFP had a copy, the minister would have received land, a luxury car and $ 20,000 in cash. “Kezzie Msukwa, on four occasions, has used his powers for acts of corruption,” the ACB said in its statement. Mr. Sreedharan was also arrested, investigators said. Earlier in December, the former finance minister and the former central bank governor were also arrested. They are accused of having manipulated accounts to obtain an IMF loan. The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, was notably elected in 2020 on the promise of fighting corruption in one of the poorest countries in the world. (Belga)
