China must see itself more objectively

The story of China is undoubtedly impressive, but so what? They can not expect applause for progress, but not criticism for gross human rights violations.

If there is an objective discussion China’s ambassador to Norway Yi Xianliang wants, he can send a letter to Xi Jinping. Ask him to open up for objective discussions among all Chinese to get more perspectives than the state-approved ones.

An objective discussion is impossible as long as the Chinese Communist Party deprives its own people of democratic rights.

In China, there is no freedom of the press. It is not allowed to openly criticize the authorities. Objective information is filtered out of the Chinese firewall to control the information people receive. Nevertheless, the ambassador claims that China is a democracy.

This must change quickly if China wants to be taken seriously in the debates. The impression left outside China is that the authorities are so afraid of objective information that they only accept information that suits their own propaganda apparatus. Which is understandable when you look at how China is on the offensive in the South China Sea, against Taiwan and against its own people.

The health authorities can not conjure

In Aftenposten’s online edition on December 25, five professors write: “Anxiety eats the soul.” They criticize the wording “game changer”, but without a word about omikron. Do they not read newspapers about developments in Europe, the Netherlands and Denmark?

Aftenposten had on 13 December – the same day as the government’s new measures – a wide-ranging criticism from the same professors, but without a word about omikron. In Aftenposten on December 16, I called for the professors’ “situational understanding”, but we do not get it now either. No, these professors can not be taken seriously either as infection control counselors or pastors.

The government is fully aware that many are being hit hard, but our foremost human right is the protection of life and health. The measures are due to the government’s duty of care to protect the rule of law.

The professors call for a proportionality assessment with “clear, quantified goals”. Have they really not realized that the authorities have specified that it is not possible to quantify the consequences of omikron? Professors can not call for the impossible, the health authorities can not conjure!

Schools must be kept open

In an editorial on December 29, Aftenposten is critical of the government’s choice to start the new year at the red level in upper secondary school.

I share Aftenposten’s desire for as many open schools as possible, but I do not agree that there is no academic basis for the red level now. The problem with the yellow level in the traffic light model in upper secondary school is that in practice it has proved difficult to reduce the number of close contacts. The school day in high school is organized differently, where students constantly change classes and subjects.

The government is now working to create a real yellow level in upper secondary school as well. Our ambition is for both kindergartens and schools to go down to the initiative level as soon as possible.

Therefore, we have announced that we will present a new comprehensive assessment of the measures already in the second week of January.

To ensure the most open kindergartens and schools possible, we encourage comprehensive testing of both children, students and staff. We have also prioritized employees in schools and kindergartens for the refresher dose. Before week three, 65 percent will either have received a refresher dose or are ready for vaccination.
