Is it right that fully vaccinated people from rich countries should now receive a third vaccine dose?

The government must take the initiative for a fair distribution of vaccines globally, writes Omar Yagci (17), leader of Innlandet Unge Venstre.

We are characterized by an unsympathetic “my country first” attitude.

The government aims for everyone over 18 to receive a third dose of coronary vaccine, so-called refresher dose, by the end of February. In isolation, it’s nice. But from a global perspective, it is bloody unfair.

In the Liberal Party, we often say that “no one is free until everyone is free”. The same message applies to the question of the global vaccine distribution.

Free rein

As long as there are still many countries with minimally vaccinated, the virus has almost free rein to mutate and create new varieties that affect the whole world. Also here in Norway where most people are vaccinated.

Several different varieties could possibly have been avoided with a fairer vaccine distribution.

Is it true that fully vaccinated people from rich countries should receive a third dose of vaccine when the world’s poorest have not received their first?

Rich countries must come together for a fair distribution of vaccines, says Omar Yagci.

It is fundamentally unfair and absurd that rich countries, such as Norway, should give a third dose of vaccine to completely healthy adults while almost none of the inhabitants of African countries have been vaccinated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has previously pleaded with the world’s richest country to sale with a third vaccine dose to at least 10 percent of all countries in the world are vaccinated.

The target of 10 percent has not been reached, and this applies in particular to many countries in Africa. This is the result of an unsympathetic “my country first” attitude.

The government must look up

Like a number of other major challenges, the pandemic must be resolved through boundless cooperation. Rich countries must come together for a fair distribution of vaccines.

Now the Government and Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party) must look up. They must stop a third dose of vaccine to the general population and rather give it to the poorest in the world.

The story of the world’s vaccine distribution does not have to end as bloody unfair as it is now. The government must take the initiative for a fair distribution of vaccines globally, and start with itself.
