A scene that is cold in the back. In New Mexico (United States), an 18-year-old woman who had just given birth was filmed on January 7, throwing her baby in a trash can, before leaving behind the wheel of her car.
The newborn was found six hours later by three people walking past the trash. The latter were alerted by the baby’s moans.
According to the local police department, the infant was “in very weak condition”. He was wrapped in a bloodstained blanket, inside a garbage bag containing other garbage.
The little boy, who still had his umbilical cord, was taken to hospital. Now in stable condition, he has been placed in the care of the New Mexico Department of Children, Youth and Families.
The identified mother
The mother’s vehicle was identified by the police. Aged 18, she was arrested the next day. “She admitted to throwing her baby away, explaining that she panicked right after giving birth,” said the Hobbs police chief.
The young woman was unaware that she was pregnant until the moment of childbirth.
She has since been charged with attempted murder and child abuse. She faces up to 15 years in prison.
