WAS stopped Tottenham – Chelsea ready for the final of the league cup

(Tottenham – Chelsea 0-1, 0-3 overall) Harry Kane (28) and Tottenham went goalless off the field at home against Chelsea. Thus, Tottenham fans will have to wait for a new opportunity to take the club’s first trophy since 2008.

NO GOAL: Harry Kane and Tottenham reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Kane has not scored against Chelsea since January 2019, and on Wednesday he played his seventh game in a row without scoring against the city rival. Chelsea can largely thank VAR for that.

In both the first and second rounds, referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty to Tottenham, but in both cases VAR intervened and Chelsea escaped with the horror. When Kane then got the ball in goal after just over an hour, VAR came in once again.

The TV pictures showed that the Englishman was a little too far ahead and the goal was correctly canceled for offside.

Thus, Antonio Rüdiger’s scoring in the first half became the only match. The Chelsea player got his head first on the ball after a corner kick in the first half, and with the 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Chelsea won 3-0 overall and are ready for the final of the league cup.

With that, the trophy drought for Tottenham continues. The London club have not won a trophy since they won the League Cup in 2008. For Chelsea, a meeting against either Arsenal or Liverpool awaits in the final, where they can take this year’s first trophy after winning the Champions League and UEFA’s Super Cup last year.

– It was a very deserved victory. The best team went on, says Viaplay’s football expert Rune Bratseth in the Viaplay studio after the match.

VARx3: Three times VAR intervened in key situations, all of which ended in a negative – but apparently correct – outcome for Tottenham.

Manchester City had won the League Cup the previous four seasons, including after final victories against Chelsea (in 2019) and Tottenham (in 2021). This season, the Manchester club was eliminated already in the fourth round away against West Ham, and on Wednesday Tottenham and Chelsea had an opportunity to grab a place in the final.

It was Chelsea who came to Wednesday’s match with the best starting point, after they beat Tottenham 2-0 at home at Stamford Bridge in the first match.

SCORED WITH THE BACK HEAD: Antonio Rüdiger (number 2) was first on the corner kick and headed in 1-0 with the back of the head.

Wednesday night it was Chelsea who took command from the start and after a quarter of an hour the only goal of the match came. Tottenham goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini was on his way out in the field on a corner kick, and behind him came Antonio Rüdiger and put the ball in goal with the back of his head.

Tottenham managed to rise eventually, and had a couple of great chances just after half an hour had been played. Five minutes before the break, the home fans thought they would get the chance to equalize from the penalty spot after Pierre-Emile Højbjerg went down in the field, but after a VAR check, it was concluded that the Dane was fielded outside the 16-meter.

ONLY ALMOST: Harry Kane was close to an equalizer before the break.

Thus, Tottenham needed three goals in the second half to have a chance to reach the final, and it was clear that the home team wanted to give it a real try in the second half. Again, they thought they would get the opportunity from the penalty spot when Andre Marriner pointed to the penalty spot ten minutes into the inning when Lucas Moura was tackled by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga inside the box.

The judge was quickly called to the VAR monitor, and then the conclusion came quickly: No penalty.

As if that was not enough, VAR wasted again for Tottenham when Harry Kane got the ball in goal shortly after. The goal was correctly canceled for offside, and after that Chelsea had good control the last half hour.
