CAN 2022: Aubameyang and Lemina leave the competition for medical reasons

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina will leave their selection and CAN 2022 to return to their clubs, following medical problems, the Gabonese Federation announced on Monday.

“Given the medical concern that Pierre-Emerick (Aubameyang) and Mario (Lemina) encountered, in agreement with the doctor, my federation president and the players, we made the wise decision to bring them back to their clubs so that they can get treatment, be taken care of, ”said Patrice Neveu, coach of Gabon at a press conference on the eve of the match against Morocco.

For two reasons, he added: “The first is that there are no big alarms about heart problems, because they don’t have heart problems, on the other hand, on site, we are not in control of analyzing the dangerousness of the waste that caused this inflammation.”

Aubameyang and Lemina tested positive for Covid-19 four days before Gabon’s first CAN match. They missed their team’s first two games, against Comoros (1-0 victory) on January 10 and Ghana (1-1) four days later.

Despite a negative test, they did not play against Ghana, since they retained some traces of Covid, according to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), required in the protocol of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“We can’t take any risks. And in addition the psychological aspect becomes unbearable for them. Staying in the room becomes unbearable. So (Sunday) we talked about it and we decided to bring them in, added the French technician to Agence France-Presse. It’s hard to lose part of your strong core, Pierre-Emerick is world class, with Mario, plus Denis Bouanga is positive.

Aubameyang and Lemina retain residues of the disease, and this “can last a long time, explains Neveu. They no longer have the Covid, but the clubs are calling, we can’t find the right solution to do the exams.
