Fagermo gives the Vålerenga jewel a new role: – A much greater responsibility

VALLE (VG) Clubs from Europe’s best leagues have shown concrete interest in Odin Thiago Holm (19). But this spring we will most likely see the teenager in a new midfield role for Vålerenga.

MUST BE BALL CENTER: Odin Thiago Holm in a match against Ghent in the European Cup last summer.

In the VGTV program «Silly Season» Vålerenga coach Dag-Eilev Fagermo confirms that he will tease Holm in the central midfield in 4-3-3 in the run-up.

– I have probably decided that we will work with him in the central midfield role now. With great mobility and enormous creativity. Apart from Bodø / Gimt away last year, we had the ball the most in all the matches. Then creativity is needed, Fagermo explains.

This means that Fredrik Oldrup Jensen – who Fagermo brought to Vålerenga after having had the player in the old club Odd for many years – gets increased competition for the midfield position. No outside players in the Eliteserien had more playing minutes than the Vålerenga anchor in 2021.

– Oldrup is a fighter and takes up that fight. He understands that he is in a top club, and then there is competition. It does not worry me. We are in quarantine and we are also injured, and it is not the case that Oldrup is out of the team. We had to strengthen the competition in the team and the eleven. It was far too little last year. It went beyond the table in the end, says Fagermo in the program you can see here:

– It is a role that can dress me well. I have played a lot of deep midfield on national teams and am a role I know. It will be a much bigger responsibility, but I feel ready to control the game to a greater extent. I will probably also be more involved with the ball and can therefore use my qualities more often, Holm himself considers the possibility of becoming Vålerenga’s new conductor.

Petter Strand was taken from the relegation-ready Brann and is intended for a place as an inner runner. In addition, Vålerenga has brought back Vegar Eggen Hedenstad and midfielder Brynjar Bjarnason.

– Odin must first and foremost be physically clearer. He still has some trifles that make him unable to play 90 minutes, he has to stand over a match, and then he can play 30 minutes. He must have a more stable physical body. And he gets it. He is young and was quite injured before, Fagermo thinks.

– Is he good enough defensively for such a role?

– Yes and no. He is that in many ways because he reads the game so well and has such a great shift that he wants to slow down a lot and stop a lot. Then there will be some of the physical and dueling power he has to improve through the winter, the Vålerenga coach answers.

The U-national team player could also have been lost to the club. According to Fagermo, there have been “good bids”:

– But not at a level that we think Odin is worth. Therefore, nothing has happened. I’m pretty sure he’s not being sold now. Then it may be more difficult to keep Odin for the summer, if his development continues. There have been several clubs at different times. The bigger leagues in Europe, says Fagermo.

According to the VIF manager, it has been calm around U21 national team player Osame Sahraoui, who according to the plan will return to the left wing in 2022. There he occasionally ravaged when Vålerenga became number three in Fagermo’s debut season.

There is no indication other than that Sahraoui will play in Vålerenga at the start of the series.

– I’m absolutely sure. No one in Norway has the finances to buy Osame, and we do not sell Osame to clubs in Norway or Scandinavia. If he is going out to Europe, there must be clubs that are interested first. And it is not, and it will not come now, when we are so far out in January, says Dag-Eilev Fagermo.
