Source before Kitzbühel: – My Achilles heel

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (29) is in the shape of his life and has been almost unbeatable in the speed disciplines this season. The result is five victories and one second place in eleven races.

The next stop is the world’s most dangerous downhill run, “Die Streif” in Kitzbühel.

– Kitzbühel is a bit my Achilles heel. I think it is a difficult hill to drive fast on, but I have had some quick parties and training. So I will try to change that this year, he says to VG.

On this hill, Kilde has the best result in a downhill 6th place from 2016. Last year he had to stand over the gutters after he broke the cruciate ligament in training in January 2021. The year before he drove in to 9th place.

Wednesday’s training indicates that this may be about to change: Kilde was fastest in the first training, 22 hundredths ahead of Italian Matteo Marsaglia and Austrian Matthias Mayer.

– I am very happy with the day and the form in general, Kilde said at a press conference just after he had rushed down to the best time in training.

– I get to try to make sure to drive the turn I have during the day, because it has been very fast. But it would have been cool with a gondola, I’m really “keen” on that, says the World Cup winner from 2019/20 to VG.

What he is aiming for is that when you win a race in Kitzbühel, you get your name on a gondola (lift car) in the facility. From before, Atle Skårdal, Lasse Kjus, Kjetil André Aamodt, Aksel Lund Svindal, Kjetil Jansrud and Henrik Kristoffersen have won races there.

– Kitzbühel is Kitzbühel. But there are two chances this year, so I can just try to make good use of them without making too bold a decision, and get to the finish line, says Kilde and continues:

OWN GONDOL: Aksel Lund Svindal in 2013 during the unveiling of his own gondola in Kitzbühel.

– It is a long career, and I get many opportunities here. With the equipment I have now, anything is possible. But at the same time so hits there probably a little more here, than where I usually drive the fastest.

This year, two downhill races will be arranged in the infamous route. The first attempt is on Friday, before the World Cup’s most generous race is run on Saturday. The races are the last two before the Olympics in Beijing, a dress rehearsal for the speed runners.

On Sunday, there will be downhill skiing where we can expect a new giant duel between Henrik Kristoffersen, Sebastian Foss Solevåg and Lucas Braathen. The last race before the Olympics for downhill skiers is in Schladming on 25 January.
