One person was killed and three others were injured when an armed man opened fire in a lecture hall at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, according to security sources.
Untitled sources tell the news agency DPA that the perpetrator himself was a student, and that he took his own life after leaving the room.
So far, there should be no indication of political or religious motives behind the attack.
The attacker was armed with a rifle, and he fired arbitrarily around him in the lecture hall, a spokesman for the police told AFP. According to news agency sources, all four victims were seriously injured. One of them, a young woman, later died of her injuries in hospital, according to sources.
A major police operation was launched after the man opened fire in a lecture hall on Monday.
– We assume that there was only one perpetrator. At this stage, we see no further danger to the public, police said over an hour after the first reports of the attack.
Heidelberg University near Mannheim is one of Germany’s oldest and most renowned. The Neuenheimer Feld area, where the university is located, was cordoned off when police were notified of the attack.
