Ukraine: France advises to postpone non-essential travel

The situation is increasingly tense between Russia, Ukraine, the European Union and the United States. As London and Washington repatriate their diplomatic staff from Kiev, fearing an imminent attack by Russian forces, France advises postponing trips to Ukraine.

On Sunday January 23, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a new recommendation: “In the context of the tensions created by the concentration of Russian troops on the borders of Ukraine, it is recommended to show increased vigilance and it is It is strictly advised not to travel to the border areas in the north and east of the country.

As far as possible, it is advisable to postpone non-essential or urgent trips to Ukraine”, can we read on the site diplomatie.gouv.fr.

However, France has not yet decided, like the United States and the United Kingdom, to repatriate the staff of its embassy in Kiev and the diplomats and their families present in Ukraine.

France “ready to adapt its position”

“We remain in close consultation with all our partners, in particular Europeans (..) and we stand ready to adapt our position if the situation justifies it”, declared the spokesperson for the ministry. The European Union has not planned to bring in its diplomats either.

NATO has indeed moved its ships and fighter planes to strengthen its defenses in Eastern Europe. While several countries consider it very likely that Russia will soon invade Ukraine, Moscow denounces a “hysteria”. The Ukrainian authorities have themselves judged that the withdrawal of American and British diplomats was a “premature” decision.
