Last French still in the running in the men’s draw in Melbourne, Gaël Monfils faces, this Tuesday, January 25, Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with at stake a qualification for the 3rd semi-final of his career in Grand Slam. Here is the TV program.
The French No. 1’s last quarter-final dates back to 2019 at the US Open. He had been eliminated by… the Italian after five fierce sets. The hour of revenge has come for Monfils, who has returned more motivated than ever at the start of the season. Forgot the tears and its elimination at 1is round last year in Melbourne, he has had an almost perfect tournament so far, not dropping a single set.
And he does not intend to stop in such a good way. “I’m happy, but when you’re still in the tournament, you always want to win one more game. (…) I want to keep pushing to go as far as possible,” he said after his qualification in the previous round against the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (7-5, 7-6, 6-3).
But the task will be far from simple against the Transalpin. If Monfils comes out of a more than complicated season, both in terms of results and psychologically, Berrettini, currently 7th player in the world, remains in the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and the US Open, and above all a final at Wimbledon. And Monfils is aware that he will have to fight.
“There, I play well. But we will have to play very well, ”insisted Monfils before praising the qualities of his opponent. “He’s been a very, very good player for two years, solidly in the top 10, one of the best servers on the circuit, a very flashy game with a lot of winners, a huge forehand, he moves better and better , he listed. It’s someone who really pushes you. A big puncher. It will be a big big game.”
A meeting during which he will give everything to emerge victorious and open the doors of his 3e semi-final in Grand Slam after Roland-Garros in 2008 (against Roger Federer) and the US Open in 2016 (against Novak Djokovic).
