Rafael Nadal spent five sets and over four hours beating Denis Shapovalov on Tuesday, taking it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
The settlement was over after four hours and eight minutes, and Nadal eventually won 3-2 in sets.
– Denis played well. He is very talented and he served well. It is fantastic to be in the semifinals, Nadal said after the settlement.
Nadal started well, but encountered problems along the way. After winning the first two sets, the two following went the Canadian’s way. The Canadian knocked out Olympic winner Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
In the fourth set, Nadal also had to have treatment for what appeared to be problems in the abdomen.
– I started to feel sick to my stomach. They checked it and everything was fine, Nadal said.
In the fifth set, the Spaniard showed his routine and broke Shapovalov’s first serve game. Then it was mostly about Nadal, who could finally cheer for advancement with 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.
Thus, the hunt for the record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title continues.
In the women’s quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out by Madison Keys. French Open winner Krejcíková lost in straight sets 3-6, 2-6.
The Keys can face world number one and home hope Ashleigh Barty in the semifinals. The Australian will meet Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals later Tuesday.
