Kalvå’s cross-country girlfriend: – It’s sad

Didrik Tønseth (30) feels very sorry for cohabitant Anne Kjersti Kalvå (29) after the positive corona test, but he has a hope that she will go to the Olympics anyway.

COHABITANTS: Anne Kjersti Kalvå and Didrik Tønseth.

Tønseth is himself in Italy, 64 kilometers away from his girlfriend.

– Right now it is probably best to be as far away as possible, Tønseth says a bit gallows humorous to VG.

– But it is of course very boring that the girlfriend gets that message. But top sports are brutal, says Tønseth on the phone from Predazzo in Val di Fiemme.

It was Wednesday morning that it became known that Kalvå and Heidi Weng have taken a positive coronate test at altitude gathering in Seiser Alm. It is only a week and a half until the first Olympic exercise. Sprint coach Arild Monsen tested positive on Monday – on his way home from the collection.

Weng and Kalvå have tested positive for coronavirus

Tønseth was not shocked when the cohabitant called and told about the positive test.

– Arild was the biggest shock. To expect no one else to be infected is a bit naive. But no matter who gets infected, it’s a shame. It looks like it is a virus that can not be stopped when you are so close, says Tønseth.

GOOD MOOD: Norway won Olympic gold in relay in South Korea in 2018, from left: Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Didrik Tønseth and Martin Johnsrud Sundby. Simen Hegstad Krüger also joined the team.

He can himself move up from “longlist” to Olympic runner. Tønseth was told earlier this winter to submit passport photos and information, so he assumes that he is on the “longlist” at the Olympic Summit as a reserve, but he has not been notified yet. But should the infection spread in the Norwegian squad, he is ready. If he avoids infection, of course. The list includes athletes who can come in as reserves at the last minute if someone can not participate in the games.

– According to the plan, I will go to Marcialonga on Sunday, then we will see how it goes. It will be interesting. That ski run will be an important lesson for later ski runs. We will see how the infection is after that ski run. There has been little infection in the World Cup, but in long distance running it has increased, says Tønseth.

He even has it to take Olympic gold in relay in Pyeongchang four years ago. Cohabitant Anne Kjersti Kalvå has patiently worked outside the national team, and before this season she was paid with a national team place. A few weeks ago, it became clear that she also received an Olympic ticket.

Have faith in the Olympics

– It’s a shame. It’s sad. But what has happened has happened. On top of the misery, there are many people and skiers who have had corona, and they report that it is like a mild cold. So even if Anne Kjersti does not make it to the start of the championship, she may have the opportunity to participate from the middle and out, as long as there is an itinerary to Beijing that is feasible, says Tønseth and adds:

– It will be worse if someone takes a positive test now and in the future.

COLLECTION: Anne Kjersti Kalvå and Lotta Udnes Weng (back) on a ski trip at Hafjell in February last year.

Tønseth talks about uncertainty in the Olympic squad. No one can tell exactly how it will be for the two who are infected now.

– It’s not so nice, says Tønseth.

Kalvå and Weng are isolated for ten days due to Italian rules.

The cross-country skiers were scheduled to fly to Beijing on January 27. Now it will be 31 January at the earliest.
