Politics. Italy: President Sergio Mattarella re-elected for a second term

Coalition parties in power in Italy re-elected outgoing President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday.

Aged 80, President Mattarella had said on several occasions that he did not intend to continue in office, but during the day he told the heads of parliamentary groups who had come to meet him that he would make himself “available” if he was elected. They couldn’t agree on another name.

Such a scenario would ensure stability at the top of the state by maintaining Mario Draghi, a favorite at a given time, at the head of the government, in a country in the process of economic recovery.
