Houston rapper 'Big Pokey' died at 48 after fainting on stage.

Death's cause is unknown. According to Deadline, Big Pokey fell mid-lyric in Beaumont, Texas.

The rapper may have gasped on stage in the concert footage. Big Pokey was hospitalized after a nurse in the audience performed CPR. He died early Sunday after midnight.

Social media confirmed his death. We mourn the loss of Milton "Big Pokey" Powell.

Big Pokey died June 18, 2023. Family, friends, and admirers adored him. 

We will announce his memorial service in the following days. Respect his family's privacy during this trying time.

"Big Pokey will always be ‘The Hardest Pit in the Litter,'" read the official statement.

Several of his contemporaries have lamented his death on social media. 

The music business is in shock. Slim Thug prayed for Big Pokey's family on a "sad day in the city." 

Bun B said he "wasn’t ready" for the news. One of the city's most naturally skilled painters, a humble, honorable mountain.

"He was easy to love and hard to hate," he wrote in homage. Rapper Paul Wall mournfully announced Big Pokey's death on Facebook.

Paul called the late rapper a pioneer and a mentor and friend. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner grieved his passing

His "low-key" presence helped nationalize our hip-hop scene. "Thank you." Big Pokey debuted solo in 1999 with The Hardest Pit in the Litter. 2021's Sensei was his newest album.
