At least 45 people, including 12 children, have died after a bus caught fire on a motorway in Bulgaria on Tuesday night.

A bus caught fire 45 kilometers west of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.

There were mainly tourists from northern Macedonia on board the bus, according to the news agency Reuters.

The bus is said to have been on its way back to the northern Macedonian capital Skopje after a weekend trip to Istanbul.

– I’m terrified. This is a great tragedy, says Northern Macedonia’s Prime Minister Zoran Zaev to the TV channel BTV.

Seven people managed to get out of the burning bus. They were transported with burns to a hospital in the capital of Sofia.

The cause of the accident is so far unclear, but the bus appears to have collided into a fence along the highway either before or after it caught fire.

– Burned to ashes

TV pictures from the place show that the bus was charred and ravaged by the flames.

– We have a huge tragedy here, says Bulgaria’s acting Prime Minister Stefan Yanev.

“People are locked up and burned to ashes,” said Interior Minister Bojko Rashkov.

– It’s awful pictures, awful. I have never seen anything like it, he told reporters on the spot.

The accident happened on the Struma motorway, about 45 kilometers west of the capital Sofia at 02:00 local time at night.

Bulgarian police Borislav Saratov says four buses from a North Macedonian travel company arrived in Bulgaria from Turkey late Monday night.

He says the investigation will look at whether it was human error or technical problems that led to the accident.
