Resourceful foreign criminals are probably behind what Telenor describes as a massive attack on Norwegian mobile subscribers by means of false text messages.
– We have registered a massive wave of fraud in the last 24 hours, we do not know who the culprits are, but we assume that there are quite resourceful criminals from abroad, information manager Magnus Line in Telenor informs to TV 2.
Mobile customers receive a text message asking them to download an app to hear voice messages. Telenor warns against clicking on the link and downloading the app and emphasizes that Telenor’s mobile answering service will never ask its subscribers for such.
If you download the app, you will get a virus on your mobile that gives criminals access to pick up usernames, passwords, payment information, your contact list and other personal information that can be used for further fraud attempts.
Normally, Telenor blocks 30,000 to 40,000 messages a day, but in the last 24 hours the number has risen to 165,000 messages, writes VG.
