Presidential 2022. Pécresse invested by the Republicans: a record of women candidates in 2022?

After almost 60 years of trusting only men to represent her in the presidential election, the traditional right wing invested Valérie Pécresse as the Republican candidate on Saturday. “There is also a form of daring in choosing a woman, she slipped to BFM TV ahead of the second round of the congress, won against Éric Ciotti. The Gaullist right has never presented a woman for the presidential race. […] Yes, a woman can lead. A woman can have courage, it can have daring. ”

Valérie Pécresse repeats it over and over again, “the hour for women has come”. And identifies with Angela Merkel, German Chancellor since 2005, now on departure. But also to Margaret Thatcher, who remained Prime Minister of Great Britain for eleven years (1979-1990). The president of the Ile-de-France region has even borrowed and diverted the nickname of her British reference, accused of “Iron Lady” for her firmness in the face of strikers. “The best compliment that has been given me is to call me the Lady to do”, she explained in the columns of the Parisian. “I’m more 2/3 Merkel and 1/3 Thatcher”, she specified to Point last August.

The investiture of Valérie Pécresse also means that, for the first time, the two historic blocs of the Fifth Republic, deposed in 2017, trust a woman to represent them. Anne Hidalgo will indeed wear the colors of the Socialist Party, as Ségolène Royal had done before her, in 2007. The former Minister of the Environment was beaten in the second round by Nicolas Sarkozy (46.94% of the vote). In addition, if three other women managed to collect the 500 sponsorships necessary to run, that would constitute a record of candidates for the presidential election: 5, against 4 in 2002 and 2007.

Le Pen and Arthaud should be part of it

If Marine Le Pen entrust to Parisian “Row” to obtain the signatures – “like everyone else I believe”, she specifies – difficult to imagine the candidate of the National Rally, credited with a little less than 20% in the polls, absent from the starting line. She had collected 300 signatures in mid-November. Nathalie Arthaud’s team refuses to communicate its number of sponsorships, but the Lutte Ouvrière candidate has always obtained them (637 in 2017).

4,5…6,7 ?

The candidacy of Hélène Thouy, for the Animalist Party, could also become a reality. If she does not give figures either, the lawyer and her team are active and refer to their unexpected result in the European elections of 2019, with 2.2% of the vote. “The animalist party proved during the Europeans that it was much more representative of the population than many other candidates, she declared to Figaro mid-October. I wouldn’t understand if we couldn’t be at the start line, really. ” Hélène Thouy is confident, convinced of being on the official list of candidates. This would bring the number of candidates to five.

Two other candidates also hope to be on the starting line, even if the 500 signatures could be a serious obstacle: Clara Egger, professor of political science and head of Espoir RIC 2022, who has been building her candidacy for a year around a small team, supported by people from the “yellow vests”. The movement had made the citizens’ initiative referendum one of its flags. And Marie Cau, elected in 2020 at the head of the village of Tilloy-lez-Marchiennes (North) as the first transgender mayor of France, who is also looking for sponsorship.

Arlette Laguiller forever the first

If the Fifth Republic dates from 1958, it was not until 1974 to see the first woman candidate, with Arlette Laguiller (Lutte Ouvrière), who had won 2.33% of the votes cast in the first round, far from the 32.60% qualifying of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, second behind François Mitterrand (43.25%).

Women will subsequently remain in the large minority in terms of the number and percentages of votes won. It will actually be necessary to wait for the candidacy of Ségolène Royal so that women weigh on the vote (30.7% cumulative in the first round of 2007, including 25.87% for the Socialist).

Since then, only Marine Le Pen has qualified for the second round, in 2017.
