Poland: nearly 40,000 attempts to cross the border from Belarus

(Belga) Poland has counted nearly 40,000 attempted illegal crossings at the border with Belarus in 2021, it was reported Monday in Warsaw. Most of these 39,714 attempts having been recorded by border guards in recent weeks.

For weeks now, thousands of migrants and refugees have been trying to cross the external borders of the European Union from Belarus towards Poland or the Baltic States. The European Union (EU), for its part, accuses the authoritarian leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately taking people from conflict zones in order to smuggle them into the EU. According to Polish border guards, the number of asylum applications has also increased significantly. While they were 2,600 in 2020, nearly 8,000 people applied for asylum in Poland last year.
