Suspected of having gone to jihad, a file S and his mother finally considered by justice as tourists

A 64-year-old mother and her 27-year-old son, file S, arrested in Gaziantep, Turkey, on suspicion of “criminal terrorist association” were ultimately considered tourists by the anti-terrorism prosecution.

Placed in a detention center in Turkey, both were deported to France. They were then taken into police custody on December 28, according to information from the Parisian.

While the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) had opened a preliminary investigation for “criminal terrorist association”, the young man explained that he had taken his mother on vacation to Turkey.

The latter, on file S since 2017 for suspicion of Islamist radicalization, would therefore have liked to change his mother’s ideas, after the sudden death of his sister.

Man presented to a judge

After twenty-four hours of hearing, the 64-year-old mother was released without charge. However, the anti-terrorism prosecution decided to present the son to a judge for indictment after four days in police custody.

But after investigation, the anti-terrorism magistrate did not follow the opinion of the prosecution and decided to place him under the status of assisted witness. A very rare fact in a case of Islamist terrorism. Man was thus left free.

To justify himself, the magistrate declared that the first elements of the investigation were not brought to light and that no contact between the son and any jihadist in Syria could be established.
