Amedia refused to pay the ransom. But Norwegian companies also choose to pay, confirms Kripos. It stimulates the market for digital blackmail.

It attracted attention when Amedia’s over 80 newspapers did not come out on Christmas Eve. The reason was that hackers had penetrated the production system and blocked the employees from their own systems.

This well-known scam method is now spreading wildly. The European agency for cyber security ENISA estimates that there has been a 150 percent increase in such so-called ransomware attacks from April 2020 to July 2021.
