6:09 am: Cases explode in Argentina, 80,000 in 24 hours
Argentina is seeing a dramatic increase in the number of people positive for Covid-19. The Ministry of Health released the latest virus figures on Tuesday, with 81,210 new infections identified, 30,000 more than the previous record recorded since the start of the pandemic, which dated last Thursday, 50,506. New daily cases increased 16-fold in just over two weeks, compared to numbers – around 5,000 new cases a day – which still prevailed in mid-December. Before this last spectacular wave, the record went back to the peak of the pandemic in Argentina, at the end of May-beginning of June: 41,000.
5:47 am: Hospital pressure continues
As a result of the outbreak of contaminations, hospital pressure is not weakening: in total, 20,186 patients were hospitalized on Tuesday, against 19,606 on Monday, or 2,881 new admissions in 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health France. A trend that is also confirmed in critical care services, which accommodate the most serious forms of the disease: in total, these services treated 3,665 patients on Tuesday with 460 admissions in 24 hours, against 3,654 the day before.
By way of comparison, if the number of patients treated in critical care (3,665) remains far from the peak of the first wave (more than 7,000, in 2020) or that of the third (6,001, in 2021), it risk of becoming familiar in the short term to that of the second wave (4,903, in 2020). In 24 hours, hospitals recorded 297 deaths.
64 children are currently in intensive care in France because of a serious form of Covid, a figure that is rising sharply, Minister of Health Olivier Véran told MEPs on Tuesday.
5:46 am: A new record of contaminations on Tuesday
A total of 271,686 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in 24 hours on Tuesday, according to figures released by Public Health France. The last record dates back to the end of December, with just over 230,000 new cases in one day. Over the past seven days, the average number of cases was 180,000.
