Pope regrets that pets “sometimes replace children”

Pope Francis once again praised the merits of parenthood and adoption during the general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, regretting that pets “sometimes take the place of children.”

“Today, we see a form of selfishness. We see that some do not want to have children. Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats taking the place. It may make you laugh, but it is a reality, “said the Pope during the first weekly general audience of the year.

According to him, “this amounts to denying fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity”. Thus, “civilization ages without humanity because we lose the richness of fatherhood and motherhood, and it is the fatherland that suffers,” added the Sovereign Pontiff before the pilgrims gathered in the Paul VI room.

The Pope also urged couples who cannot have children to “think about adoption”. “Having a child is always a risk but there is more risk in not having one, in denying paternity,” he said, calling on the faithful “not to be afraid”.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio has already repeatedly denounced “demographic winter” and the “dramatic” drop in the birth rate.

At the end of the audience, as is regularly the case, the Pope attended a circus number performed with clowns, jugglers, dancers and musicians, in a festive and quirky atmosphere contrasting with the solemn setting of the Vatican.
