Covid-19 epidemic. Deltacron, a mix between Delta and Omicron, discovered in Cyprus

And it goes on and on … While the two variants Delta and Omicron continue to circulate very widely all over the planet, causing the number of contaminations to skyrocket (more than 300,000 new cases recorded in France in the last 24 hours, according to Public health France), on the island of Cyprus, researchers are worried.

And for good reason, twenty-five people were infected by… Deltacron, a contraction of the Delta and Omicron variants. Leondios Kostrikis, professor of Biology at the University of Cyprus told television that there are “currently Omicron and Delta co-infections and we have found this strain which is a combination of these two”, reports Bloomberg News Agency.

This strain of Covid-19 was so named since the researcher identified “Omicron-type genetic signatures in Delta genomes”. Cypriot media CyprusMail reveals that Delcatron would have been spotted in 11 hospitalized patients and 14 in the population.

More information from next week?

For now, it is still too early to assess the impacts of this fusion between the two variants. “The frequency of mutations was higher among those who are in hospital, which may suggest that there is a correlation between Deltracron and hospitalizations. We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail ”, indicated Leondios Kostrikis to the CyprusMail.

Data on this discovery was sent to GISAID at the Institut Pasteur, the international virus database, for more information. A press conference should also take place later this week. Cyprus already has the highest incidence rate in Europe …
