Recep Tayyip Erdogan was fed up: the Turkish president asked the UN, in January, to change the English name of Turkey, as reported it Le Figaro. Currently in negotiations, he pleads to change the name of his country internationally.
In the language of Shakespeare, Turkey is thus called Turkey. Either the same word as to designate a turkey. Tired and eager to give his country a more serious image, the Turkish leader therefore decided to rename his country in English.
Turkey devient Türkiye
Turkey would henceforth be called Türkiye. “The word ‘Turkiye’ best represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
A communication campaign was launched on social networks to promote this new designation.
