Richardson Viano, the Olympic destiny of the first Haitian athlete at the Winter Olympics

Born in Haiti in 2002, Richardson Viano was adopted in France and raised in the Hautes-Alpes near Briançon. Presenting himself under the colors of his country of origin, the 19-year-old young man will become the first Haitian skier to take part in the Winter Olympics which will take place from February 4 in Beijing, China.

“We are not many professional Haitians to ski. I feel really excited, I’m looking forward to this moment, “said the athlete at the microphone of RMC Sport.

Initially, Richardson aimed to join the French Ski Federation, but his performance unfortunately did not allow him to join the team.

It was without counting on Jean-Pierre Roy, president of the Haitian ski federation, also living in France. He decides to open the doors of his federation to him by offering to ski for his native country.

A “message of hope”

Since then, Richardson hopes to embody a model of success for his country of origin, especially with children who, like him, are placed in orphanages.

“I want to bring a message of hope for Haitians, but also for young people from other countries in difficulty,” he said. You have to believe in your dreams and never give up,” he said.

Note that the 24th Olympic Winter Games will take place from February 4 to 20, 2022. On the program: 109 events divided into 15 disciplines.
